Top 10 Effective Speech Therapy Techniques for Children
19-08-2024

Speech therapy is an important component in the development of effective communication skills. From articulation to fluency or comprehension, the right techniques can make a difference in a child’s development. Let’s take a look at some of the best speech therapy strategies for kids:

1. Articulation Therapy

Articulation therapy is a therapy in which the goal is to make children pronounce the sounds correctly. A method of analysing a word into its sound components and practising each sound. Visual supports, such as mirrors, are used to assist children to see how their mouth moves when making sounds. Practicing and repetition is the key to articulation.

2. Language Intervention Activities

Language intervention activities are designed to enhance the child’s language abilities through conversation, reading and game play. The activities are aimed to improve vocabulary, sentence construction and language understanding. Children are likely to be more able to absorb and retain information as it becomes part of activities that are enjoyable and interactive.

3. Oral-Motor Therapy

Oral-motor therapy helps to increase the strength of speech production muscles. It includes exercises which challenge the lips, tongue and jaw to promote coordination and control. This type of therapy is particularly useful for children who have speech sound disorders or dysarthria that improve the child’s ability to speak with clarity.

4. Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)

PECS is a communication system that uses pictures to facilitate communication for non-verbal children. Children are taught to trade pictures for items that they wish for and/or need. This technique will enable the child to understand the concept of communicating, and make him/her feel free to communicate even if he/she is not yet able to speak.

5. Prompts and Cues

Prompts and cues are effective strategies for guiding children in speech therapy. Verbal prompts, such as asking a question, can encourage a child to respond. Visual cues, like pictures or hand gestures, can help children understand and remember what they need to say. Over time, these prompts can be gradually faded as the child becomes more independent.

6. Modeling

Modeling – therapist or parent shows the correct sound or word to produce. Children learn by imitating the modeled behavior. By using a consistent model, children can learn the correct speech pattern which will help reinforce that pattern and encourage them to practice and use the correct speech pattern without the model.

7. Phonological Awareness Activities

Phonological awareness is the awareness and manipulation of sounds in spoken language. This ability is crucial for speech and literacy and is practised in activities involving rhyming, breaking words into sounds and putting sounds together.

8. Interactive Storytelling

Interactive Storytelling asks and answers questions, predict what will happen next and describe characters or events, engaging the children in the story. This approach improves expressive language, word knowledge and understanding.

9. Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement helps children to engage in speech therapy sessions and to do their best work, such as praise or reward. Therapists and parents can encourage kids to keep making progress with their speech and language skills by celebrating what they have achieved and accomplished.

10. Use of Technology

The use of technology, such as speech therapy applications and interactive games, can help increase the engagement during therapy. These are fun, interactive, and are effective ways for children to practise their speech and language skills in a non-traditional therapy setting.

Every child is different, and a combination of some of the following methods is most likely to be effective. However, improvements can be made in a child’s speech and language skills with patience, consistency and the use of suitable strategies.
